Bio
Jonathan Rue (JR) has spent his career at the intersection of national security, public policy, and government. A Marine Corps veteran, his career in public service has included serving as a national security advisor in the U.S. Senate and as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon, giving him firsthand experience with both congressional and executive branch decision-making and a deep bipartisan network. His work has focused on defense strategy and resourcing, including how government priorities translate into funding and capabilities. At MVP Ventures, JR leads the firm’s government practice, drawing on that experience to help founders understand how decisions in Washington can shape their businesses and how to engage effectively with the people making them.
That work extends well beyond companies selling directly to the federal government. JR knows that businesses across technology are increasingly affected by policy, regulation, national priorities, and the growing relationship between Washington and the innovation economy. For founders, ignoring those forces can mean missing an opportunity or recognizing a risk only after it has become difficult to change course. His role is to help companies see around those corners, understand the levers available to them, and navigate a system that can feel foreign from the outside.
Public service has also shaped how he thinks about leadership. Across the Marine Corps, U.S. Senate, and Department of Defense, he has worked for and alongside people who instilled in him the importance of service, leading by example, and taking care of the people around you. He found that same sense of shared mission at MVP, along with the opportunity to help build something meaningful. Outside of work, JR is teaching himself to play guitar, a challenge that has tested both his patience and discipline, and spends much of his free time with his family.
